Alateen is part of the Al-Anon fellowship and is for young people, aged twelve to seventeen (inclusive), who are affected by a problem drinker. Alateen members share their ideas and experience in order to gain a better understanding of alcoholism; they learn to accept it as an illness and so lessen its impact on their lives. By removing their preoccupation with the drinker's behaviour they are able to focus on their own development and sense of identity. |

Does someone you care about use drugs? When drug addiction enters a family via one of its members, the effect can be devastating. If you have reason to believe or even a vague suspicion that someone close to you may have a drug problem, we know how you feel. We know what it is like to be alone with this problem. We remember the feelings of panic and frustration that resulted from this discovery. We in Families Anonymous have experienced this too. Mail and email to the office will be dealt with on a daily basis. In the near future the helpline will be answered by an FA volunteer between 10am and 10pm seven days a week. If you fail to speak to someone PLEASE leave a message or email us. A volunteer will get back to you as soon as the messages are collected. We will not leave a message for you and will only talk to you. |

This booklet is designed for anyone who wants to know more about mental distress – those who experience it, their friends, families, carers and mental health professionals. It's not intended to be a means of do-it-yourself diagnosis, but should help identify the warning signs. It aims to help people to understand the causes and effects, and to cope better when it strikes. We use the term mental distress in preference to medical labels such as schizophrenia or manic depression (bipolar disorder). |

We want to hear your story and your ideas to help other patients, and to improve the NHS. Here are some of the things that you can do on Patient Opinion: patients and carers can find out what other people think of mental health services; lots of people share the story of what happened to them or their family when they were ill; most important of all patients and carers can tell it like it is - patients and carers know what the service was like and come up with lots of great ideas about how it could be better. So you can tell people what happened to you, as well as reading what others think. |

The Carers Support Service provides confidential information and support to people who are looking after a family member, friend or neighbour in the Adur, East Arun, Worthing and Chanctonbury areas. We provide information in the way of a large, comprehensive information library, a quarterly newsletter, a Carers Information Pack, as well as a duty line which is staffed between 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday. We also offer emotional support through phone support and counselling, specialist support workers for carers of people with Learning Difficulties and for carers of people with Working Age Mental Health difficulties which is not dementia. Our Support Workers can provide information, advice, training and support, both one to one and in groups. They can also assist carers to access their own assessments and care plans where appropriate. The service can be accessed by a referral from any source with the carer’s permission or self referral. |

| Description |
Are you one of the thousands of children and young people in West Sussex who help care for a relative who has a long-term illness or disability? Children with caring responsibilities are sometimes called 'young carers'. The person you care for may spend a lot of time in hospital, or may be too unwell to go to work or school. They may need a wheelchair to get around or take lots of different medicines to stay as well as they can. They may drink too much alcohol or take illegal drugs that make them act differently. If this sounds like your family, you are not alone! Lots of young people want to help out and feel proud that they are lending a hand. But sometimes caring can get you down. Cooking, cleaning, listening, comforting, keeping a watchful eye and generally helping someone to look after themselves may make you feel stressed and really worried. You may have no time for yourself. Did you know there is a whole team of people here to support you? |

The aim of the group is to help the family and friends of people with a current, suspected or former drug problem by providing mutual support; and to offer a forum where experiences and anxieties can be shared. In the group members learn to come to terms with the problem that is disrupting their lives. Attending meetings helps members adopt an honest and consistent approach towards the addict. This in turn often brings him/her to realise that he/she needs help to live without drugs. Experience has shown that help for the family and friends means important help for the drug-dependent person. |

Mental Health Services and Self-Directed Support (SDS)
The West Sussex PCT and West Sussex County Council fund a dedicated ILA team member to promote DPs and other forms of SDS to people eligible for mental health services.
Services for those on self-directed support (SDS)
Advice, information and support to disabled people and carers who receive money to meet their care needs under West Sussex County Council’s SDS schemes, including Direct Payments (DPs).
Advocacy For Independence (AFI)
Advocacy to all disabled people and carers on matters related to independent living. The service employs management staff and uses fully-trained paid and independent volunteer advocates to help people have their voices heard.
Independent Payroll Service (IPS)
A professional payroll and tax service to people employing their own care support staff.
Independent Administration Service
Additional assistance to people who would otherwise find it difficult to deal with the administration required to receive and manage their own social services money.
PA recruitment
Helping SDS clients to advertise for and recruit their personal assistants. Although the ILA is not a staffing agency and therefore cannot offer a recruitment service directly, we provide extensive help to enable people to do their own recruiting effectively and safely.
User involvement and consultation
Encouraging involvement and ensuring consultation with disabled people, carers and stakeholders over a wide range of service and policy issues.
Disability and social care training
Training to stakeholder organisations based on the ILA's direct experience and involvement in the latest developments in disability affairs and social care transformation.
Carers and SDS
A dedicated member of the team is responsible for promoting self-directed support to carers and making sure that the views of carers and their organisations are heard.
CRB Checks
The ILA is a fully registered umbrella organisation for carrying out CRB checks. It means we can arrange these important checks on potential employment recruits for individual clients or for other organisations.
Research Projects
The ILA, often in conjunction with other organisations such as West Sussex County Council, undertakes research into initiatives designed to facilitate independent living and to explore new service models.
Support Groups
The ILA is setting up support groups throughout West Sussex. This follows successful pilot programmes bringing clients together to discuss key matters and provide peer support.
Independent Living Fund (ILF) support
The ILA has developed appropriate information and training so that more disabled people can gain access to funding from the ILF towards meeting their care needs. We are continuing to develop this work to provide support in this area.
Conference Programme
The ILA’s annual conference, which deals with current issues relating to the independent living and disability movement, forms the basis for campaigning activities.
Information
A range of information material is produced and maintained by the ILA, including our website and a widely-distributed quarterly newsletter.

Your experience counts if you are: a user; a carer; needing to be heard; feeling isolated; lacking in self-esteem and confidence; angry; unsure; needing information or advice; someone with ideas on self management or complementary treatment; not able to share your situation with friends or colleagues. Join in and gain more confidence, make new friends, get practical advice, get to know yourself better or learn to manage mood swings.

Mid Downs Crossroads - We share the care
Most of us juggle busy lives, but if you look after a relative or child, a partner or a friend who needs your help because they are ill or frail or have a disability, you probably find it extremely difficult to have some time for yourself. Mid Downs Crossroads offers support to carers in the Mid Sussex area and has five social clubs operating in various locations. Our social clubs offers the chance of a day out from home for the person being supported. Carers are positively welcome and many enjoy being part of a small, friendly and welcoming group that is sensitive to each person's care needs and personality. Activities are optional and chosen with similar sensitivity. Alternatively, the carer has the opportunity to have a day for themselves - they are also very welcome to stay for part or all of the day if they wish to. There is a small daily charge to attend, plus an additional cost for a two course lunch. |

West Sussex Limited Areas |
| Description |
Our social clubs offers the chance of a day out from home for the person being supported. Carers are positively welcome and many enjoy being part of a small, friendly and welcoming group that is sensitive to each person's care needs and personality. Activities are optional and chosen with similar sensitivity. Alternatively, the carer has the opportunity to have a day for themselves - they are also very welcome to stay for part or all of the day if they wish to. There is a small daily charge to attend, plus an additional cost for a two course lunch. |
