Feeling down... unable to cope? Beating The Blues - cognitive behavioural therapy - helping you to get better and stay better
The symptoms of anxiety and depression vary from person to person. Often symptoms occur with thoughts or images of being out of control, overwhelmed, embarrassed, in danger or unable to cope. Depression and anxiety are extremely common. In fact one in every five people is affected at some time in their lives. They often go hand in hand but they can occur alone too. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) has been used successfully for many years. Rather than focusing on what has happened in your past, CBT helps you focus on what is happening in your life here and now. Results are quick and effective if people work through the programme and carry out weekly projects in between sessions. |

The Big White Wall is a web-based support service that provides an online community to bring people with emotional or psychological distress together to discuss their problems and to seek solutions together. NHS West Sussex is initially funding 276 free places for county residents, giving them access to safe, confidential online support 24 hours a day. The Big White Wall project, provided in partnership with The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, is intended to allow people to access help from their own homes, in a way that suits them and at times of their choosing. It also allows people to access help without feeling stigmatised. Three quarters of Big White Wall members talk about an issue for the first time in their lives. Apart from the opportunity to share worries with others, members can take ‘distress tests’, learn more about themselves, create vibrant images about how they feel, and learn how to feel better. Trained staff are on hand at all times to provide extra support and ensure that everyone is safe. Once the 276 spaces have been filled West Sussex residents aged 16 or over can still access the Big White Wall by paying a subscription to the provider of £2 per week, £7 per month or £70 per annum. |

Books on Prescription (BoP) is a scheme that was first developed in Cardiff in 2003 and is now established in many places in the UK. West Sussex Library Service is working in partnership with NHS West Sussex to provide BoP throughout the county in West Sussex. GPs and other health professionals have a list (see Related Documents) of 60 approved books on mental health issues such as anger, depression, anxiety, stress, and so on. They can 'prescribe' a book to a patient using a specially produced prescription pad. The patient takes the prescription to the library and the staff will help them find the book. If the book is not immediately available, it can be requested free of charge. There is a set of books in each library in West Sussex. |

Depression Alliance supports a national network of self-help groups across England which all welcome new members. Self-help groups provide a forum where people who are affected by depression can meet to share experiences and coping strategies with others in similar situations. Groups aim to provide mutual support and understanding in a non-judgemental, confidential environment. Meetings are not the same as therapy (although they do have a therapeutic value), but many people find that they gain much from the acceptance and understanding of fellow members. Please note that currently there are no Depression Alliance self-help groups based in West Sussex. The nearest one to most of the county takes place in Hove. There are others in Hampshire, Kent, London and Surrey. Current details can be found on the website. *** If you would be interested in helping to set-up a group in West Sussex, please contact Steve on 01403 750165 *** |

Many people seek to take control of their mental health using self-help, and to find approaches they can use alongside, or even instead of, prescribed medication. One self-help strategy is to make changes to what we eat, and there is a growing interest in how food and nutrition can affect emotional and mental health. |

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is exactly what you might think – a first aid approach to mental health. Originally founded and developed by Betty Kitchener and Professor Tony Jorm in Australia, MHFA has been successfully introduced around the world, in countries as widespread as Hong Kong, Singapore, Finland, Canada, USA and Scotland. Mental Health First Aid England is a Community Interest Company (CIC), providing the MHFA and Youth MHFA instructor training programme. Approved instructors then go on to deliver either the MHFA or Youth MHFA course. Usually taught over two days, the course is evidence-based and has been developed and regulated by the National Institute for Mental Health in England (NIMHE). It covers the causes, symptoms and treatments of common mental health problems. |

Almost half of UK consumers (45%) are trying to lose weight, and nearly two thirds (62%) are worried about their bank balance, yet many don’t make the connection between their drinking and an expanding waistline or empty wallet, according to new research by alcohol awareness charity Drinkaware. So to help consumers better understand the effects of drinking alcohol on their health and all-round wellbeing, Drinkaware has developed MyDrinkaware – an easy-to-use online unit calculator and drink diary. The tool provides personalised feedback on risk levels based on consumers’ alcohol consumption and shows data in units, calories and spend. MyDrinkaware also lets people set spending and lifestyle goals and gives tips on how to reach these. To try MyDrinkaware for yourself visit the website. Every person who signs up to MyDrinkaware between May 23rd and August 31st 2011 will be entered into a draw to win one of three spa weekends. One prize will be given away each month. |

The Recovery Star tool was commissioned by the Mental Health Providers Forum in 2007. The Recovery Star is used for supporting and measuring change when working with adults of working age who are accessing mental health support services. As an outcomes measurement tool it enables organisations to measure and summarise progress being made by an individual as well as the service being delivered through a project. It is also an effective keyworking tool, designed to support individuals in understanding where they are in terms of recovery and the progress they are making, providing both the client and worker a shared language for discussion mental health and wellbeing. The Recovery Star measures ten core areas of life which can be used to identify any difficulties people using services are experiencing in each of these areas and how far they are towards addressing them and moving on. The Recovery Star approach is being now being used by many providers of mental health services. |

WRAP stands for Wellness Recovery Action Plan™ and it works! It has been developed by a group of people who experience mental health difficulties. These people learned that they can identify what makes them well and then use their own wellness tools to relieve difficult feelings and maintain wellness. The result has been recovery and long-term stability. Your WRAP program is designed by you in practical, day-to-day terms and holds the key to getting and staying well. It does not necessarily replace traditional treatments and can be used as a compliment to any other treatment options you have chosen. |
