| Arts therapies are a way of using the arts – for example, music, painting, clay, dance, voice, or drama – to express yourself in a therapeutic environment with a trained therapist. Arts therapists help their clients to express themselves and to make sense of what they have created in the context of their life experience and their state of mind. |

Feeling down... unable to cope? Beating The Blues - cognitive behavioural therapy - helping you to get better and stay better
The symptoms of anxiety and depression vary from person to person. Often symptoms occur with thoughts or images of being out of control, overwhelmed, embarrassed, in danger or unable to cope. Depression and anxiety are extremely common. In fact one in every five people is affected at some time in their lives. They often go hand in hand but they can occur alone too. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) has been used successfully for many years. Rather than focusing on what has happened in your past, CBT helps you focus on what is happening in your life here and now. Results are quick and effective if people work through the programme and carry out weekly projects in between sessions. |

Depression Alliance supports a national network of self-help groups across England which all welcome new members. Self-help groups provide a forum where people who are affected by depression can meet to share experiences and coping strategies with others in similar situations. Groups aim to provide mutual support and understanding in a non-judgemental, confidential environment. Meetings are not the same as therapy (although they do have a therapeutic value), but many people find that they gain much from the acceptance and understanding of fellow members.
Please note: There are no Depression Alliance self-help groups based in West Sussex. The nearest one to most of the county takes place in Hove, details of which you will find below. |

This group meets every 3rd Wednesday of the month at The Priory Hospital, 14-18 New Church Road, Hove, BN3 4FH, from 7.30pm to 9.00pm. For more details please call Justin on 07977 048416, or click here to send an email. |

| Many people seek to take control of their mental health using self-help, and to find approaches they can use alongside, or even instead of, prescribed medication. One self-help strategy is to make changes to what we eat, and there is a growing interest in how food and nutrition can affect emotional and mental health. |

Wellness Recovery Action Plan™ (WRAP)
WRAP works! It has been developed by a group of people who experience mental health difficulties. These people learned that they can identify what makes them well and then use their own wellness tools to relieve difficult feelings and maintain wellness. The result has been recovery and long-term stability. Your WRAP program is designed by you in practical, day-to-day terms and holds the key to getting and staying well. It does not necessarily replace traditional treatments and can be used as a compliment to any other treatment options you have chosen. |

It does not necessarily replace traditional treatments and can be used as a compliment to any other treatment options you have chosen. In developing your own WRAP, you’ll identify the wellness tools that will most benefit you and will learn how to use these tools when needed, every day or when you have particular feelings or experiences. WRAP will help you monitor and relieve uncomfortable and distressing feelings and behaviors and identify your best course of action. WRAP planning also includes Crisis Planning (an Advance Directive) that lets others know how you want them to respond when you cannot make decisions, take care of yourself, or keep yourself safe, and a Post Crisis plan to guide you through the often difficult time when you are healing from a crisis. |
